How do we translate
Deepavali’s cultural richness into a digital campaign rooted
in Singapore’s Indian identity?

2025 | Social Media Campaign

INDIAN HERITAGE CENTRE

THE LOCAL MOTIVE

The Indian Heritage Centre was looking for a creative partner who could approach Deepavali with both cultural sensitivity and a strong design lens. As the campaign would also mark the Centre’s 10-year milestone, it needed to feel meaningful, layered, and visually distinctive rather than purely promotional.

DESIGN PROBLEM

The Indian Heritage Centre was looking for a design partner who could approach Deepavali not just as a festival campaign, but as a cultural narrative. With the 10-year milestone approaching, the brief called for sensitivity to tradition as well as a fresh design language that could travel across digital and physical experiences.

LOCAL’s practice sits at the intersection of research, culture and design. Our process begins with immersion understanding the stories, symbols and people behind a brief before translating them into visual systems. This meant going beyond decoration and exploring meaning: offering, celebration, memory and community.

SINGAPOREAN INDIAN

To shape the campaign meaningfully, we began by understanding the Singaporean Indian; a community rooted in heritage yet shaped by a modern, multicultural nation.

The Singaporean Indian is culturally anchored but globally aware. Often second- or third-generation, they carry inherited traditions with intention rather than habit. Their identity is layered: proudly Singaporean in civic life, deeply Indian in cultural memory. Festivals like Diwali are not just ritual observances; they are moments of visibility, belonging, and continuity.

For them, Diwali is a reaffirmation of roots in a global city; a time when tradition becomes public, intergenerational, and emotionally resonant. It is less about reinvention and more about preserving meaning across time and geography.

DIWALI
IN SINGAPORE

In Singapore, Deepavali is both a national celebration and a deeply personal cultural moment. As a recognised public holiday, it brings visibility to the Indian community through the iconic light-ups in Little India, temple rituals, and community programming. Yet beyond the public spectacle, it remains an intimate celebration of family, faith, and continuity.

For the Singaporean Indian, Diwali is not merely festive; it is affirming. It is a moment where heritage becomes visible within a multicultural nation, where tradition is practised with intention, and where identity is celebrated confidently in a global city.

Understanding this duality, public celebration and private belonging; informed our approach. The campaign sought to reflect Diwali not as an aesthetic event, but as a living expression of rootedness, memory, and cultural pride within Singapore’s contemporary landscape.

SAME SAME
BUT DIFFERENT

In India, Diwali is expansive, it fills entire cities with light, sound, and celebration. The festival surrounds you; it is woven into the national rhythm.

In Singapore, Diwali glows within a different landscape. The rituals remain the same lamps lit, prayers offered, families gathered but the celebration feels more intentional. Within a multicultural society, it becomes a conscious act of continuity and cultural pride.

The essence is unchanged. What shifts is the weight it carries.

In India, Diwali is immersive. In Singapore, Diwali is affirming; a way of holding on to heritage while confidently belonging to a global city.

THE ELEMENTS

For this campaign, we intentionally incorporated visual elements that resonate with Diwali celebrations in Singapore, grounding the work in a culturally familiar context. The illustration language draws inspiration from vintage devotional prints, reinterpreted through a contemporary lens. Intricate line work and nuanced shading become the core visual devices, creating depth, texture, and a sense of reverence. This interplay between tradition and modern execution gives the campaign both authenticity and a distinctive artistic character.

THE GRID SYSTEM

The modular grid system is derived from the structural rhythm found in traditional devotional prints and panchang prints, where composition is carefully framed, bordered, and symmetrically balanced. We translated that visual discipline into a flexible grid architecture that anchors the layout while allowing adaptability across formats.

Though rooted in tradition, the system is inherently modular; it can expand, contract, and reconfigure into multiple shapes without losing its visual integrity. This balance between structure and fluidity allows the campaign to remain cohesive across touchpoints while still feeling dynamic and responsive. The grid becomes more than a layout tool; it acts as a contemporary reinterpretation of sacred framing, reinforcing both cultural depth and design versatility.
